How AI helps BIM Managers
AI helps BIM managers most with the writing and checking around the model: BIM execution plans, information requirements, coordination reports and clash summaries. It drafts and organises the written side of information management, which is often where the hours go.
Working to ISO 19650 and the UK BIM Framework means a lot of structured documents, from the BEP and responsibility matrix to naming conventions and meeting records. AI can draft these from your project details and keep the wording consistent, and summarise clash reports by zone and discipline. What it can't do is judge the model. No tool can decide which clashes matter or whether a model is fit to share.
Start with one document, such as the BEP summary for a new job. Use a business account with data controls, because models and project information are usually confidential to the client. Check every standard, role and deliverable against the appointment and the client's information requirements.

- BIM execution plans: drafts a BEP or BEP summary covering goals, roles, standards, naming, information exchanges and coordination.
- Information requirements: helps turn a client brief into draft organisational, asset and exchange information requirements for review.

Where to be careful
- Model judgement: AI clash summaries can miss context. Whether a clash is real, who fixes it and whether a model is fit to issue are decisions for the BIM manager and the design team.
- Standards accuracy: tools can misquote ISO 19650 or invent requirements. Check against the standard, the UK BIM Framework guidance and your appointment.
- The golden thread: on higher-risk buildings, the Building Safety Act requires accurate, up-to-date building information. AI can help structure it, but people must check what goes in.
- Security: models and drawings can be commercially or security sensitive. Keep them out of personal accounts, and follow any security requirements in your appointment.

- How is AI used in BIM?
- Mostly around the model rather than in it: drafting BEPs, summarising clash results, checking naming and writing meeting records. Some authoring and checking software now has AI features too. Either way, the output needs checking by someone who understands the model and the appointment.
- Can AI write a BIM execution plan?
- It can draft a good first version from the client's information requirements, the team, the software and the project standards. It can't set your strategy or commit the team to deliverables, so review it with the task teams before it's accepted.
- Can AI do clash detection?
- Clash detection itself is rule-based and has been in coordination software for years. AI helps with grouping and prioritising the results, cutting out duplicates and writing up the summary. Someone still decides which clashes matter and who fixes them.
- Will AI replace BIM managers?
- It's more likely to change the role than replace it. AI will take on more drafting and reporting, but setting the information strategy, getting the team to follow it and judging whether the model is right still need a person.
- Does AI work with ISO 19650?
- It can help you apply it, for example by drafting documents in the right structure or checking names against a convention. It doesn't make a project compliant. Check anything it says about the standard against the published standard and the UK BIM Framework guidance.
