How AI helps Design Managers
AI helps design managers most with the coordination paperwork: design review checklists, RFI responses, query logs and design team meeting actions. You give it the brief, the drawing and specification references and the question, and it gives you a structured draft to check.
It's useful for making sure nothing gets missed, such as a review checklist covering the interfaces between structure, envelope and services, or an RFI response that sets out the query, the design intent and what else it affects. What it can't do is check a design. It carries no design responsibility, it can misread drawings, and it doesn't know what the designers have agreed unless you tell it.
Start with one task, such as the review checklist for your next design stage. Use a business account with data controls, because drawings and specifications are usually confidential to the client. Check each draft against the current documents, and make sure the right designer answers anything technical.
Where AI helps most
- Design review checklists: builds a checklist for the stage and building type, covering interfaces, buildability, fire strategy coordination and maintenance access.
- RFI responses: drafts the query, design intent, resolution and drawings affected, for the designer to confirm.
- Query logs: sorts open RFIs and design queries by discipline, age and impact, so the meeting deals with what matters.
- Document summaries: pulls the key points out of specifications, consultant reports and comment sheets.
- Information required schedules: turns programme and procurement dates into a list of what design information is needed, from whom and by when.

Where to be careful
- Design responsibility: AI can't approve a design. Technical answers come from the designer responsible, and the principal designer coordinates health and safety in the pre-construction phase under CDM 2015.
- Higher-risk buildings: under the Building Safety Act, design changes need careful control and a golden thread. Whether a change has to go to the Building Safety Regulator is for the dutyholders to decide, with advice.
- Misread drawings: tools get dimensions, references and revisions wrong. Check everything against the current issued revision.
- RFIs that become change: an RFI answer can amount to a change. Make sure it goes through the proper instruction route, and if it affects cost or time, check your contract and take advice.
Frequently asked questions
- How can AI help a design manager in construction?
- Mostly with the written side of coordination: review checklists, RFI responses, query logs, information schedules and minutes. It won't coordinate the design for you, but it can cut the time spent writing things up.
- Can AI check construction drawings for errors?
- Not reliably. Some tools can read drawings and flag possible issues, but they miss things and get references wrong. Use AI to build the checklist and organise comments, and have competent people review the current revision.
- Can AI write an RFI response?
- It can draft one from the query and the designer's answer. The technical content has to come from the designer responsible, and the response should be checked before it's issued, because it may become an instruction.
- Will AI replace design managers?
- Unlikely. The job is getting designers, contractors and the client to agree on buildable information at the right time. AI can take on more of the drafting, but the judgement and the relationships stay with the design manager.
- Can AI help with the golden thread?
- It can help structure the information, for example by checking a document register for gaps or summarising changes in plain language. It can't decide what must be kept or confirm it's accurate. The dutyholders stay responsible, so take advice on what your project needs.
