Toolbox talk: lighting and visibility on dark mornings
Editor: Owen Hagger
Write a five-minute toolbox talk on working safely in poor light: task lighting, walkways, plant movements and being seen, adapted to your own site.
When to use it
In late autumn and winter, when the first hour or two of the shift starts in the dark or half light. Trips on unlit routes, people not being seen by plant drivers and work carrying on under poor task lighting all become more likely. The supervisor delivering the talk owns it and should adapt it to the site. AI only drafts it.
The prompt
You are helping a UK site supervisor prepare a five-minute toolbox talk on lighting and visibility for early starts in the dark. About the site: [SIZE AND TYPE OF PROJECT, e.g. a housing site with 40 plots under construction] Start time and typical light at start: [e.g. 7.30am, dark for the first hour] Plant and vehicles moving at that time: [e.g. telehandler, dumpers, deliveries] Lighting we have: [e.g. tower lights at the compound and main haul road, head torches issued] Known problem areas: [e.g. unlit path from car park to welfare, scaffold access on plots 12 to 18] Write a talk with: - Why poor light matters on this site, in two or three sentences. - The main risks at this time of year, no more than five, in plain words. - What we do about each one, using only the arrangements I've listed. Where I haven't given an arrangement, write "[SITE ARRANGEMENT TO CONFIRM]" rather than inventing one. - What everyone should do if lighting fails or an area is too dark to work safely, including who to tell. - Three questions to ask the gang to check they've understood. Rules: keep it under 400 words, short sentences, UK spelling, and no legal claims or statistics. Refer to the site's traffic management plan and RAMS rather than restating them.
What it produced
A short talk the supervisor can read out in about five minutes: why light matters on this site, up to five risks with the site's own arrangements against each, gaps clearly marked as arrangements to confirm, a clear "if it's too dark, stop and tell" instruction, and three check questions.
What you still check
- Every arrangement in the talk is one the site actually has, and every "[SITE ARRANGEMENT TO CONFIRM]" gap is filled before you deliver it.
- It matches the traffic management plan, RAMS and any lighting checks your site already does.
- Problem areas named in the talk get fixed, not just mentioned.
- Everyone who attends signs the toolbox talk record.
Steps
- Walk the site at start time once and note the dark spots, plant routes and lighting you have.
- Run the prompt with those details and fill any gaps it marks.
- Deliver it at the start of the shift, ask the three questions and get the record signed.
